A family fun day will be held later this month to raise money to save Thaxted's historic windmill and its millwrighting machinery.

The event will take place on Sunday, September 22 from midday to 5pm at Thaxted Windmill.

For children there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, decorating the pinwheel and traditional games.

There will also be a licensed bar and live music for adults, as well as a plant and homemade preserves stall along with Thaxted Pet Co.

Refreshments will be available for everyone from the sausage sizzler barbecue, Saffron Ice Cream and Giddy Up Tea Bar.

Members of the Thaxted Windmill Trust CIO and volunteers will be on hand to talk about the repair and conservation work needed, the plans to improve access to the windmill and stories of the owners and workers from when the windmill was in operation from 1804 to 1907.

Mark Rickards, secretary to the trustees, said he hopes that there will be "strong community support" for the event.

He said: "Entry to the fun day is free with a charge for the activities but if you’re unable to be there in person, you can donate to help save the windmill by visiting our website, Facebook or Instagram pages where you will find a QR code and a link: https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/Q9UN6T9K."

Thaxted Windmill Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) whose purpose is to promote for the benefit of the public the restoration, preservation and maintenance of John Webb's Windmill in Thaxted.

This also includes the care of the collections of agricultural, social and natural history housed within the windmill.

Thaxted Windmill Trust CIO has submitted funding applications to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and to Historic England, and is currently applying for other grants to help with repair and conservation - along with access improvements, interpretation and opportunities for community involvement.

John Webb's Windmill was restored from 1973 onwards, and is the only remaining windmill in Thaxted.

After operating for more than 100 years to satisfy a growing demand for flour, the mill was declared uneconomic to work in 1907 and failed to sell at auction.
